Unexpected has been a home to the PHX Zine fest for three years now, offering their incredible and eclectic space to the fest, and providing the perfect backdrop for a celebration of local DIY publishing and zinemaking.
Making its debut during the November 2015 Grand Avenue Festival, Unexpected is a gallery and venue in downtown Phoenix in historic Grand Avenue. Its design is a tribute to the industrial and commercial heart of the Grande Avenue District, highlighting the warehouse architecture of the area. The venue offers a lot, consisting of three distinct spaces; a prohibition era style SpeakEasy; The Lot, an outdoor event space with half acreage and stage; and the 7500 sq ft main Gallery.
Through partnerships with local graffiti artists muralists, the Lot has become an evolving canvas, while the Gallery has become home to several permanent and rotating art installations.
Julie Jennings, the owner, aims to make “your vision (a) reality,” facilitating experiences as much as events.
